Mourinho Leaves AS Roma With Immediate Effect

osé Mourinho, the Portuguese football manager and former player, has left AS Roma with immediate effect, the club announced on Tuesday. The decision comes after a series of poor results that left the team ninth in the Serie A table, 22 points behind leaders Juventus.

Mourinho, who joined Roma in May 2021, signed a three-year contract with the club, but failed to deliver the expected results. He only managed to win 12 out of 28 league games, losing 10 and drawing six. He also suffered an early exit from the Coppa Italia, losing to Fiorentina in the round of 16, and was eliminated from the Europa League by Ajax in the quarter-finals.

The club said in a statement: “AS Roma can confirm that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect. We thank José and his staff for their work and wish them all the best for the future.”

Mourinho, who has won trophies with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United, said: “I am very sorry that we could not achieve our goals together. I want to thank the club, the players, the fans and the staff for their support and professionalism. I wish Roma all the best in the future.”

According to multiple reports, Roma are expected to appoint former club legend Daniele De Rossi as caretaker manager until the end of the season. De Rossi, who was the assistant of Roberto Mancini with the Italian national team and coached in the Italian second division at SPAL during the 2022-23 season, is a fan favourite and knows the club well.

Roma will play their next game against Genoa on Sunday, hoping to improve their position and qualify for a European competition next season.
