Comedian Highlights Subscription Sharing as a Major Issue
Popular Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun has pointed the finger at Nigerians for contributing to Netflix’s challenges in the country amid speculation about the streaming platform halting funding for Nigerian original movies.
The controversy began when filmmaker Kunle Afolayan claimed that Netflix had stopped commissioning Nigerian projects, raising fears that the streaming giant was pulling out of the market. Addressing the situation in an interview with Nollywood on Radio, Makun clarified that Netflix is not exiting Nigeria but is re-strategizing due to financial concerns.
Low Subscriptions and Sharing Issues
Makun stressed that Netflix’s investment in Nigeria has not yielded expected returns, blaming widespread subscription sharing for the shortfall. Despite Nigeria’s population exceeding 200 million, the platform reportedly has only around 300,000 subscribers, a figure Makun said reflects significant “leakage.”
“Most Nigerians share one Netflix account across multiple people. If a business is spending more than it’s earning, it’s only natural to re-evaluate its approach,” Makun explained.
Netflix’s Future in Nigeria
The comedian also confirmed that Netflix remains committed to the Nigerian market, revealing that his recent discussions with the company included plans for his next project. “At my last meeting, Netflix never said they were leaving. It’s about re-strategizing because of revenue challenges,” he added.
Makun’s comments highlight the need for Nigerian audiences to change their habits and support streaming platforms more sustainably. While Netflix’s reassessment may raise concerns, Makun reassured fans that the company’s presence in Nigeria is not at immediate risk.
The remarks underscore the growing tension between streaming platforms’ investments and consumer behavior in emerging markets like Nigeria.
