Afrobeats sensation opens up about her love life and career in Dazed Magazine interview
Grammy-nominated Afrobeats star, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, better known as Ayra Starr, has shared a surprising revelation about her personal life. In a recent interview with Dazed Magazine, the 21-year-old singer disclosed that she has “never fallen in love,” despite her reputation as a “lover girl.”
The Mavin Records star, who graced the cover of the British lifestyle magazine’s latest issue, admitted that while she has been in various romantic situations, she has never been in a fully committed relationship. Ayra attributed her single status to her unwavering focus on her music career, which she has pursued since the age of 15.
“I want to fall in love. I wrote ‘Lagos Love Story’ about what love would look like if I was. I am a lover girl deep in my heart, I’m just very strong-headed about it. I actually have never been in love,” Ayra Starr shared. “I’ve been in certain situations—not situationships!—but I’ve never been in a fully committed relationship.”
She explained that her intense schedule, including modelling, university, and now a thriving music career, has kept her from finding time for love. “I’ve put myself out there and tried to see what’s there, but I don’t think I’ve had the time. I’ve been working since I was 15… now I’m on the road.”
The “Rush” singer also reflected on her journey of enjoying life and embracing her independence, saying, “It’s me just enjoying myself as a girl. I’m like, let me sing to a cute boy today, and I’m looking around because I can—why not?”
Since releasing her viral hit “Bloody Samaritan” in 2021 and her debut album “19 and Dangerous”, Ayra Starr has rapidly risen to fame. Her recent album, “The Year I Turned 21,” continues to solidify her place as one of Africa’s brightest young stars.
