Ayra Starr Sparks Jollof Debate, Chooses Ghanaian Jollof Over Nigerian (video)

Afrobeats Star Prefers Ghanaian Flavor for Its Unique Garnishing

Afrobeats sensation Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, has reignited the age-old rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana over who makes the best jollof rice. In a recent interview on BET Amplified, the 21-year-old singer revealed her preference for Ghanaian jollof rice, citing its distinctive garnishing as the deciding factor.

“I mean, they are both really amazing,” Ayra Starr explained. “I grew up with Nigerian jollof rice. Nigerian jollof is practically called party rice, so people eat it at parties. It’s like a celebratory food.”

The “Bad Vibes” singer went on to describe the cultural nuances of each country’s jollof tradition. “Nigerian jollof is usually cooked in a big pot outside, so it kind of burns and has a smoky flavor. It’s called smoky jollof rice. Ghanaian jollof rice, on the other hand, has ingredients like protein and vegetables mixed in, whereas in Nigerian jollof, those are served separately. So, it’s two different vibes.”

The debate over which country makes the superior jollof rice has been a long-standing one, with fans from both nations passionately defending their version on social media.

Ayra Starr’s comments come shortly after the release of her album, The Year I Turned 21. The artist gained widespread fame in 2021 with her hit song “Bloody Samaritan” and her debut studio album 19 and Dangerous, which featured tracks like “Away” and “Rush.” Her rapid rise in the music industry has earned her numerous accolades, including a nomination for this year’s Grammy Awards in the Best African Music Performance category for “Rush,” making her the youngest Nigerian female artist to achieve this milestone. Unfortunately, she lost the award to South African singer Tyla.
