Grammy-Nominated Nigerian Singer Shares Inspiring Journey to Success
Ayra Starr, the talented Nigerian singer known for her soulful voice and captivating performances, has left fans in awe with her exceptional academic achievement at a remarkably young age.
In a recent interview with Billboard News, one of America’s leading media outlets, Starr revealed that she was admitted to university at the tender age of 14. Despite her burgeoning passion for music, Starr emphasized that her mother’s insistence on completing her education before pursuing her dream of becoming a teenage pop star was a pivotal factor in her academic success.
Recalling her journey, Starr shared, “I feel like my mum has been using music to blackmail me since I was a child. She was like, ‘If you want to do music, you have to do this.'” Initially hesitant to relocate from Benin Republic to Lagos, Starr’s mother convinced her that Lagos was the epicenter of the music industry, igniting Starr’s determination to pursue her dreams.
Starr’s commitment to education and music led her to enroll in university at a remarkably young age. Knowing that delaying her education would hinder her aspirations of becoming a teenage pop star, Starr made the bold decision to complete her secondary school education early and pursue her passion simultaneously.
“I joined my elder brother and wrote JAMB, what you guys called SAT here,” Starr explained. “To be honest, the result wasn’t crazy to get me onto all these Ivy League schools, but it was enough for my mum. I got admitted into a good school. My course was for three years. It was International Relations.”
Upon graduating from university, Starr wasted no time in pursuing her musical aspirations. She began sharing music covers online, showcasing her talent to the world. In a whirlwind turn of events, Starr’s exceptional talent caught the attention of Mavin Records label, and she was signed as an artist the same year she graduated.
