Barcelona Admits Financial Struggles Blocked Nico Williams Transfer

The Spain winger remains a target for Arsenal, Chelsea, and PSG ahead of 2025 window.

Barcelona has admitted their inability to secure the signature of Athletic Club star Nico Williams during the 2024 summer transfer window due to financial constraints—a development that will pique the interest of clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and PSG.

The 22-year-old Spain winger, whose release clause stands at €58 million, emerged as one of the most sought-after talents following his standout performances at Euro 2024. Barcelona led the race for his signature, while Premier League heavyweights Arsenal and Chelsea, alongside Ligue 1 champions PSG, closely monitored his situation.

Despite the interest, Nico chose to remain loyal to Athletic Club, leaving Barcelona’s ambitions unfulfilled.

Barcelona’s Admission of Financial Hurdles

Speaking to El Chiringuito, Barcelona official Enric Masip conceded that the club’s financial troubles played a significant role in their inability to close the deal.

“When a player doesn’t want to move, your options are limited,” Masip said. “But realistically, it’s hard to believe we would have paid €50-60 million for a player if we couldn’t register him.”

This acknowledgment reflects the Blaugrana’s ongoing financial struggles, which have restricted their ability to invest in marquee signings.

A Summer 2025 Move on the Horizon?

While a January move for Nico Williams is unlikely, the summer of 2025 could reignite the transfer battle for the winger. His release clause remains unchanged, and his current Estimated Transfer Value of €51 million puts him within reach of several top clubs. Athletic will be powerless to stop his departure if a club triggers the €58 million clause.

Barcelona may revisit the deal next summer, buoyed by an expected financial boost from a new sponsorship agreement with Nike. However, LaLiga has yet to confirm whether this will provide enough financial flexibility to secure high-profile signings.

Premier League Interest Remains Strong

Arsenal, seeking reinforcements in wide areas, could view Nico as a valuable addition to their squad, while Chelsea might also enter the fray if they create room in their roster. PSG remains a potential contender, as the French giants continue to target top-tier talent across Europe.

Athletic Club, meanwhile, is reportedly working to extend Nico’s contract in hopes of retaining their key player. However, with interest from Europe’s elite and Barcelona still seen as a frontrunner, a summer move appears increasingly likely.

As the transfer window nears, Nico Williams’ future promises to be one of the defining stories of 2025.
