Catalan Giants Plan to Revisit Deal for 22-Year-Old Winger Next Year
Barcelona are set to renew their pursuit of Athletic Club star Nico Williams next summer, following a failed attempt to secure the 22-year-old’s transfer during the recent window. Despite being heavily linked with the promising winger, the Catalan club was unable to finalize a deal, partly due to financial constraints and the player’s specific conditions.
Reports suggest that Williams had initially given his approval for a move to the Blaugrana, but imposed certain requirements that Barcelona could not meet. One of the main hurdles was the club’s difficulty in affording his €58 million release clause, as well as complications surrounding player registrations.
Barcelona had hoped to secure additional funds through a new sponsorship deal with Nike, which ultimately did not materialize. This financial setback, combined with their current salary cap issues, made it impossible for the club to accommodate Williams’ demands in time.
The club’s registration problems were highlighted when Dani Olmo could only be registered after Andreas Christensen’s injury, utilizing the emergency injury rule. It was a clear indicator of the delicate financial balancing act Barcelona had to perform.
In a bid to make room for Williams, Barcelona had planned to offload Ansu Fati and even considered handing Williams the iconic number 10 shirt. However, these plans were thwarted as the deal couldn’t be closed swiftly and assurances about immediate registration couldn’t be provided — a condition Williams insisted upon to avoid leaving Bilbao on poor terms.
Barcelona’s intention to sign Williams next summer remains strong, provided they can resolve their financial issues and meet the player’s conditions. With the Basque winger’s contract set to expire in June 2025, the Blaugrana are hoping to reach a pre-agreement with him in January to secure his move once the summer window opens.
As the club continues to navigate its financial challenges, the prospect of adding Williams to their ranks next season offers hope of further strengthening Xavi’s squad, which has already seen several key additions. For now, the focus will be on securing the necessary resources and making room for one of Spain’s brightest talents.
