Barcelona Fans Demand Laporta’s Resignation Over Player Registration Fiasco

Fan Group Som un Clam Criticizes Club Leadership for Financial Mismanagement

A group of FC Barcelona fans has called for the resignation of club president Joan Laporta, citing frustrations over the mishandling of player registrations and broader financial concerns.

The controversy revolves around the registrations of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, the club’s only first-team signings during the summer transfer window. Olmo was acquired for over $60 million from RB Leipzig, while Victor joined from Girona for $2.6 million (€2.5 million).

Due to La Liga’s strict financial regulations, the players were temporarily registered under a loophole created by injuries to Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen. However, as of December 31, La Liga confirmed that both players would not be eligible to play for the remainder of the season unless Barcelona complied with economic control rules. A judge also denied an appeal, and La Liga removed the players from Barcelona’s official squad list on January 1.

Fans Express Frustration Over Leadership

The situation has sparked outrage among supporters, particularly the fan group Som un Clam, which released a scathing statement on January 2, accusing Laporta and his board of amateur management.

The group expressed “total indignation and shame” over the handling of the registrations and demanded Laporta’s resignation. They claimed the situation reflects broader issues in the club’s leadership under Laporta’s tenure, which began nearly four years ago.

“What we have experienced in the last hours of 2024 shows that the vicious circle in which the club’s governing team has entered has fully exploded,” the statement read.

Financial Mismanagement and Broken Promises

Som un Clam criticized Barcelona’s financial strategy, including the use of so-called “levers” — selling future assets to cover immediate financial gaps. The group argued that these measures have undermined the club’s long-term stability and tarnished its reputation.

“Despite promises of recovery, the club still lacks a solid financial plan or a coherent strategy to ensure stability in the medium and long term,” the group stated.

They also highlighted concerns over transparency and alleged excessive commissions paid to intermediaries in sponsorship negotiations, such as the deals with Nike and Spotify.

Call for Action

The fan group called on Barcelona’s members to mobilize and demand changes to protect the club’s heritage and unique ownership model.

“We demand an end to the unfulfilled promises, constant improvisation, and irresponsible sale of assets that are mortgaging the model of collective ownership that makes us unique. A change of course is urgent,” the statement declared.

The group concluded by urging fans to make their voices heard and hold the board accountable, warning that the current leadership endangers the club’s future.

As tensions rise, the situation underscores growing discontent among fans, who see the registration debacle as emblematic of deeper systemic problems within FC Barcelona.
