Club Struggles with High Price Tags for Nico Williams and Rafael Leao, Considers Alternatives
Joan Laporta’s efforts to secure a top-quality winger for Barcelona have encountered significant obstacles, with the club’s pursuit of Nico Williams and Rafael Leao hitting financial roadblocks. Both players have been priced beyond Barcelona’s ideal budget, complicating potential deals.
Athletic Bilbao has remained firm on their €58 million (£49.4 million) release clause for Williams, leaving no room for negotiation. Additionally, the player’s salary demands further complicate the situation, making the deal nearly impossible given Barcelona’s ongoing Financial Fair Play (FFP) challenges.
Similarly, AC Milan has all but closed the door on a move for Leao, with the club content with their current squad and recent transfers. Milan has indicated that only a “silly money” offer could tempt them to part with the Portuguese winger, a scenario unlikely for cash-strapped Barcelona.
Barcelona’s financial woes are further highlighted by their inability to register Dani Olmo in their La Liga squad due to salary cap restrictions. This underscores the club’s need to offload players before making any new signings.
As alternatives, Barcelona is considering Juventus winger Federico Chiesa, who has entered the final year of his contract. While Chelsea and Manchester United have shown interest, neither has made significant moves for the Serie A star. Juventus is reportedly open to parting ways with the 26-year-old.
In the meantime, Ansu Fati’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain. The young forward is on the fringes of the club’s project, with clubs like Fenerbahce interested in a loan deal, though they prefer Barcelona to cover part of his salary. Fati’s situation will likely be resolved in the final days of the transfer window.
Raphinha is also on the list of potential departures, viewed as a “sacrificial” player to improve the club’s financial standing. However, concrete interest in the Brazilian winger has yet to materialize, with the chances of him staying at the club increasing as the transfer window draws to a close.
Given the current financial constraints, Barcelona may be forced to consider selling or loaning players who are integral to the club, a situation that highlights the ongoing challenges at Camp Nou.
