Lewandowski’s strike secures win as Hansi Flick praises team’s mentality and defense.
Barcelona extended their unbeaten run in La Liga to seven wins in seven matches after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Getafe side. A first-half goal from Robert Lewandowski was enough to secure the win, keeping Barça’s perfect start to the season intact.
Manager Hansi Flick commended his team’s mentality following the challenging match, acknowledging Getafe’s defensive strength. “We knew it would be difficult. They closed down the spaces well, but we fought for 95 minutes. I’m very proud of the team and the fans, who were crucial for us,” Flick said after the game.
Despite Barcelona’s recent goal-scoring form, they managed just one goal against Getafe’s compact defense. Flick attributed the lack of goals to Getafe’s organized play, saying, “They are very good in defense, and it’s not easy. Sometimes we lack the necessary speed, but we scored the goal we needed.”
Lewandowski’s goal took his season tally to seven, putting him in the lead for the Pichichi Trophy. Flick was full of praise for the 36-year-old striker, calling him “the best number nine of the last ten years.”
Flick also lauded the performances of several key players, including Jules Kounde, whom he described as a “great leader” for his defensive contributions, and Eric Garcia, who bounced back after a sending-off in a previous match. The manager noted, “Jules is a fighter, and his performance is very good. As for Eric, I’m satisfied with how he played.”
Youngster Lamine Yamal, who played a more central role in the match, also drew attention. Flick explained the tactical shift: “He likes to play wide, but we knew it would be difficult on the flanks, so we had him occupy central spaces at times.”
On the topic of Ansu Fati, who has not played in the last two games, Flick confirmed that the forward is fully fit but stated that the game’s toughness required other players. “It was a very tough game, and we decided that other players would play,” he said.
Regarding speculation about a potential signing of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, Flick declined to comment, expressing confidence in current goalkeeper Inaki Pena, who stepped in for the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen. “Inaki is our number one goalkeeper, and I am happy with him,” Flick said.
Barcelona’s next match will see them attempt to match a record start of eight straight wins, a feat last achieved by Gerardo Martino’s side in the 2013/14 season. However, Flick insisted that his focus remains solely on the team’s performance, not on breaking records.
