The teenage sensation remains a key part of Barça’s future despite mega offers.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club turned down a massive $270 million (€250M) offer for their rising star Lamine Yamal during the summer transfer window. Laporta did not disclose the identity of the bidding club, but reports suggest that Paris Saint-Germain, seeking a replacement for Kylian Mbappé after his move to Real Madrid, was behind the offer.
Speaking to Barça’s in-house television channel, Laporta emphasized that financial pressures did not influence the decision to reject the offer, nor did they impact other player exits. “There are those that think we transferred players to balance the accounts, but that is not the case,” Laporta said. “The players that left did so for sporting reasons.”
He added: “A club came to me with a €250M offer for Lamine, and I said no. We know what we are doing in the transfer market. We want the best players who want to be here.”
Yamal, who made his debut for Barça at just 15 years old in 2023, has quickly established himself as a key player for both club and country. Now 17, he has made over 60 appearances for Barcelona and played a significant role in Spain’s European Championship victory this past summer. Despite the rapid rise in his career, there are concerns about overexposing the young talent to senior football, with Barcelona keen to avoid a repeat of the injury troubles experienced by midfielder Pedri.
Laporta also touched on a potential clash with Spain’s national team over Yamal’s playing time. After Yamal returned to Barça with a hamstring strain following Spain’s match against Denmark, Laporta reminded Spain coach Luis de la Fuente that it is the clubs who pay the players, highlighting the need for careful management of Yamal’s fitness.
Yamal missed Spain’s game against Serbia but is expected to recover soon. Barcelona remains hopeful that he will be ready for upcoming crucial fixtures, including a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich and the highly anticipated El Clásico against Real Madrid on October 26. Yamal has already been a standout performer this season, contributing five goals and five assists in 11 appearances, alongside Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski in Europe’s top-performing front three.
