Salary Constraints and Player Departures Threaten Catalan Club’s Ambitions
Barcelona are scrambling to secure Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford before the winter transfer window closes, but the deal is far from straightforward. Rashford, while reportedly resigned to staying at Old Trafford, has expressed a willingness to facilitate a move to the Catalan giants. However, significant financial and squad challenges stand in the way.
The initial plan involved Ansu Fati departing to make room for Rashford’s arrival, but the young forward is determined to stay, despite not being part of head coach Hansi Flick’s plans for the rest of the season. Rashford has reportedly set a deadline for Barcelona to provide assurances on the deal, giving the club until the end of this weekend to make progress.
To help ease the financial burden, Rashford is said to be willing to take a pay cut. According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the English forward has offered to reduce his salary to make the move viable. However, even with this concession, Barcelona face a significant challenge. The club currently has only €3 million in available salary space to register new signings under La Liga regulations, while they would need €9 million to cover Rashford’s salary for the second half of the season.
Without further salary reductions or player departures, Barcelona would need to free up an additional €6 million to make the deal happen. While Ansu Fati’s stance complicates matters, Danish defender Andreas Christensen has emerged as a potential departure. Unlike Fati, Christensen appears open to leaving, which could provide Barcelona with the necessary financial flexibility.
Time is running out, and Barcelona’s hopes of securing Rashford hinge on resolving these financial constraints and convincing key players to make sacrifices. As the transfer window deadline looms, the Catalan club must act quickly to finalize any moves.
