Late Poulsen Equalizer Delays Title Celebration, but Bayern’s Lead Looks Unassailable
In a thrilling, back-and-forth clash, Bayern Munich came within seconds of officially reclaiming the Bundesliga title, only for RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen to break their hearts with a last-gasp equalizer in a 3-3 draw. Despite the dramatic finish, Vincent Kompany’s side remain firmly in control of the title race, sitting nine points clear of Bayer Leverkusen with a staggering +30 goal difference advantage—and just three games left to play.
Even without suspended star striker Harry Kane, Bayern seemed poised to lift the Meisterschale after a rare trophy-less season. But Leipzig had other plans, pressing aggressively early on and carving out the better chances. Young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig made a stunning reflex save to deny Amadou Haidara, while Benjamin Sesko fired over after a clever lobbed pass from Xavi Simons.
Bayern’s possession-heavy approach backfired spectacularly when Leipzig struck on a lightning counterattack. Xavi Simons robbed Michael Olise and, with a flash of brilliance, flicked the ball with the outside of his boot to release Sesko. The Slovenian forward then stunned the crowd with an audacious long-range trivela finish, leaving Urbig stranded.
Leipzig doubled their lead before halftime when David Raum’s deep free-kick found Lukas Klostermann, who glanced a header—off his ear—into the far corner. Bayern, however, roared back after the break. Eric Dier powered in a near-post header from Olise’s corner, and just 46 seconds later, Olise himself volleyed home after Serge Gnabry capitalized on a Leipzig giveaway.
The game seemed destined for a Bayern victory when Leroy Sané curled in a gorgeous finish from Joshua Kimmich’s flick. But in the dying moments, Poulsen delivered the cruelest of twists, chipping Urbig to snatch a point for Leipzig.
While the draw delays Kane’s long-awaited first major trophy, Bayern’s commanding lead means the title is all but secured. If Leverkusen fail to win against Freiburg on Sunday, the celebrations can begin early. For Leipzig, the race for Champions League football remains tight, with Freiburg posing a serious threat to their top-four hopes.
One thing is certain: the Bundesliga drama is far from over.
