Bobrisky Files ₦1.2 Billion Lawsuit Against EFCC and National Assembly

Alleges rights violations after controversial claims and legal tussle

Prominent Nigerian socialite Bobrisky has initiated a ₦1.2 billion lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Assembly, accusing both bodies of infringing on his fundamental human rights.

The legal action follows a controversial period marked by allegations from activist Verydarkman, who claimed to possess an audio recording of Bobrisky admitting to paying ₦15 million to EFCC officials to dismiss money laundering charges against him.

Bobrisky, whose real name is Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, was convicted on April 12 for abusing the naira, leading to a six-month prison sentence. However, after being released on August 5, reports emerged suggesting he never served his time in prison.

Legal and Emotional Toll

The lawsuit, filed after a court order issued on October 10 barred the EFCC and National Assembly from harassing or detaining him, accuses the EFCC of acting on unverified claims. Bobrisky alleges he was invited for questioning based on a purported WhatsApp call publicized by Verydarkman, which led to public ridicule, online threats, and a breach of his privacy.

In the suit, Bobrisky is seeking ₦200 million from the EFCC for emotional distress and ₦1 billion from the National Assembly for allegedly denying him a fair hearing.

Public Statement

In an Instagram post, Bobrisky detailed his ordeal, claiming EFCC officials forcibly removed him from a flight ready for takeoff. He accused the agency and other Nigerian security bodies of ignoring court orders and violating his rights.

“The EFCC and other security agencies in Nigeria are violators of human rights,” Bobrisky wrote. “Without any court order, the minister of interior ordered my arrest and detention, leading to worsening health conditions. It’s time the world knew about these violations.”

Bobrisky also criticized the EFCC for transferring him between Lagos and Abuja despite the ongoing legal proceedings.

Ongoing Controversy

The situation remains a focal point of public discourse, with calls for clarity and respect for legal processes. Bobrisky’s allegations have amplified scrutiny of the EFCC’s actions and the National Assembly’s involvement, highlighting concerns over the treatment of high-profile figures within Nigeria’s legal system.

Further updates on the lawsuit and its implications for both parties are awaited.
