Nigeria Correctional Service Confirms Incident in Suleja, Niger State
The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has officially confirmed the escape of 118 inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State. The incident occurred during a heavy rainfall that severely damaged the prison’s perimeter fence, allowing the inmates to flee.
Daily Trust initially reported on the inmates’ escape, highlighting how the heavy rainfall led to the destruction of the prison’s infrastructure on Wednesday. In a statement released on Thursday morning, Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) command of NCoS, provided details about the escape and the damage caused by the weather.
“A heavy downpour that lasted for several hours on the night of Wednesday, 24 April 2024, has wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Suleja, Niger State, as well as surrounding buildings,” stated Duza. “The rainfall destroyed part of the custodial facility, including its perimeter fence, giving way to the escape of a total of 118 inmates of the facility.”
The escape of such a significant number of inmates has raised concerns about security measures at correctional facilities across the country. Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the incident and take steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
