Rescue Efforts Ongoing as Several Students Sustain Injuries
Several students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) were trapped when a storey building collapsed on Ekhator Street in Ekosodin, a student-dominated area, following heavy rainfall in Benin City, Edo State, on Saturday morning.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with university officials and a rescue team working to extract survivors from the rubble. According to a student who spoke anonymously, several occupants have already been rescued, though some suffered serious injuries and have been taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
“One victim remains trapped inside the building and has been calling for help from the debris. Rescue teams are doing everything they can to locate and save them,” the student added.
The Dean of Students from UNIBEN is reportedly overseeing rescue operations on-site. The university has not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the exact number of students affected.
