In a significant development, Tajudeen Abbas, the representative of Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, has been elected as the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives in Nigeria. Abbas, who was the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured a resounding victory with 353 votes, surpassing his closest rival, former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase, who received three votes.
The election for the esteemed position witnessed a healthy competition among the contenders. Aminu Sani Jaji, another prominent candidate, also garnered three votes. Notably, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the former House Leader of the defunct 9th Assembly, nominated Abbas for the role, with Nnolim Nnaji, the representative of East/West Federal Constituency in Enugu, seconding the nomination.
On the other hand, Wase’s nomination was put forward by Tijjani Kayode Ismail and was seconded by Mohammed Ari Abdulmumin. Aminu Sani Jaji, nominated by Ahmed Yusuf Ibrahim from Katsina, also vied for the position.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the improvised meeting rooms that had been serving as the chamber for the defunct 9th House, owing to the ongoing renovation of the National Assembly complex. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as the members-elect gathered to witness the historic event.
Presiding over the inauguration proceedings, Kamoru Ogunlana, the Deputy Clerk of the House, announced that a total of 359 members-elect were present for the voting process. However, he regretfully informed the House that one member-elect from Taraba had passed away after the election, bringing the total number of members to 358.
The election of Tajudeen Abbas as the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s political landscape. As a member representing Zaria Federal Constituency, his election reflects the confidence and trust placed in him by his colleagues. It is anticipated that his leadership will foster collaboration, drive legislative initiatives, and prioritize the interests of the Nigerian people.
