Grammy-winning Artist Cites PTSD as Reason for Sudden Departure
Nigerian music icon Damini Ogulu, known globally as Burna Boy, has addressed the controversy surrounding his unexpected exit during the 2025 Greater Lagos Countdown concert.
The incident, which took place at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), occurred when an overzealous fan breached security and rushed toward the singer mid-performance. Startled by the encounter, Burna Boy halted the show and left the stage, leaving fans in shock.
Videos of the moment quickly spread online, sparking mixed reactions. While some supported the artist’s decision as a safety precaution, others criticized it as disrespectful to his home audience.
Taking to Instagram, Burna Boy shared an explanation for his actions. He revealed that he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition that can be triggered when he is startled during performances.
“It was a free show. I was supposed to do 10 minutes and did almost an hour. Everybody knows my rule about getting on stage and startling me when I’m performing,” he wrote in an Instagram story.
“I had an amazing time with Lagos State last night. Don’t jump on my stage like that! I got PTSD. I love you all. Happy New Year.”
PTSD is a mental health condition caused by traumatic experiences, often leading to heightened anxiety and emotional stress in triggering situations.
The Greater Lagos Countdown concert, an annual celebration across Lagos’ IBILE divisions, featured performances from top Nigerian artists, including Wizkid, Olamide, Tiwa Savage, and Adekunle Gold. Despite the incident, Burna Boy expressed gratitude to his fans for their support and emphasized the importance of respecting boundaries.
