Afrobeats Star Insists He Doesn’t Use Songwriters
Afrobeats and dancehall sensation Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, has addressed misconceptions about his songwriting process. Contrary to popular belief, Burna Boy emphasized that he does not use songwriters.
In a social media post, Burna Boy clarified that the individuals credited on his songs are producers, not writers. He explained that in the international music scene, producers are often mistakenly referred to as writers.
“Any name you see credited on my songs are only producers of the songs or featured artists, not writers,” Burna Boy stated. “For some reason, the Western world considers producers as writers of the instrumentals and they just throw their names on there as writers. Nobody can write for Odogwu.” 
This clarification comes after Logos Olori, a signee of Davido, mentioned in an interview with City 105FM that major artists, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido himself, often hire songwriters. He noted that as artists grow busier with tours and other commitments, they need help with songwriting.
“Most people who shame artists for using songwriters don’t know much about the music business,” Olori said. “When you have ten shows in a week in different countries, you understand the need for a songwriter. Chris Brown has a songwriter, Michael Jackson had a songwriter. That’s how it is for Burna Boy, Wizkid, and many others.”
Burna Boy’s comments aim to set the record straight and highlight the distinction between the roles of producers and songwriters in his music.
