Cameroon End South Africa Hoodoo to Reach AFCON Quarterfinals

Defiant Lions Hold On for 2-1 Victory, Overcoming Decades of Frustration Against Bafana Bafana

Cameroon finally broke a 15-year winless streak against South Africa on Sunday, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals.

The Indomitable Lions, who had not beaten South Africa in their last seven meetings, rode their luck early on but struck decisively with two goals in quick succession. Defender Junior Tchamadeu broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, calmly finishing after a goalmouth scramble, before Christian Kofane headed home a crucial second just two minutes after halftime.

“We showed the heart of a lion today,” said Cameroon coach David Pagou. “The players knew the history, but they wrote a new chapter. This was a victory of spirit.”

South Africa started brightly, with Relebohile Mofokeng and Lyle Foster both wasting excellent chances to take an early lead. After falling behind, Bafana Bafana pushed relentlessly for a way back into the game but found Cameroon goalkeeper Devis Epassy in inspired form, making a series of vital saves.

A late goal from Evidence Makgopa in the 88th minute set up a tense finale, but Cameroon’s defense held firm through five minutes of stoppage time to seal a historic victory.

“For us, this is more than just a win,” said goalscorer Tchamadeu. “It’s about pride and proving we can overcome any opponent.”

The victory sets up a quarterfinal clash against the winner of Monday’s match between Nigeria and Guinea. For South Africa, a promising tournament ends in familiar frustration, unable to capitalize on their early dominance against a resilient Cameroonian side.
