Nigeria Fights Back for 1-1 Tie with South Africa in Uyo
Nigeria’s Super Eagles had to fight back to secure a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo last night.
Despite being the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) runners-up, the Super Eagles struggled to meet the expectations of their fans. They found it difficult to control the game against a determined and energetic South African team. The visitors took the lead in the 29th minute when Themba Zwane skillfully bypassed the Nigerian defense and scored past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria managed to level the score early in the second half, thanks to a brilliant solo effort by Dele Bashiru, a Turkey-based player, who found the net in the 46th minute.
Having drawn their first two matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, the Eagles were under pressure to win against South Africa to revive their World Cup campaign. However, they failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, resulting in another draw.
With this result, the Super Eagles remain winless in their three qualifying matches and sit in fifth position. Their chances of making it to the 2026 World Cup are now in jeopardy.
