Chelsea Continue Struggle to Secure Centre Forward as Transfer Deals Stall

Blues Face Hurdles in Signing Jhon Duran and Samu Omorodion

Chelsea are finding it challenging to secure a new centre forward in the transfer market, with their attempts to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran and Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion hitting roadblocks.

Negotiations with Aston Villa over Duran have stalled, and a bid for Omorodion has been rejected by Atletico Madrid. Earlier this summer, Chelsea were disappointed when Benjamin Sesko chose to stay at RB Leipzig rather than join the Blues.

Now, Chelsea are eyeing Sesko’s RB Leipzig teammate, Lois Openda, as a potential signing. Openda, 24, is seen as a perfect fit for new manager Enzo Maresca due to his versatility and ability to adapt to different playing systems. The Belgium international had an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga, scoring 24 goals and providing seven assists. He previously played a key role for Lens in Ligue 1, helping them finish just one point behind PSG.

Despite Chelsea’s interest, signing Openda seems difficult. His release clause, set at €80 million, won’t be active until next summer. RB Leipzig previously valued him at €100 million, but it’s unclear if they might lower this price now that Sesko is staying. Even at €80 million, Openda would be an expensive buy for Chelsea, who are already struggling to finalize smaller deals for Duran and Omorodion.

Adding to the complication, Openda is currently with Belgium at Euro 2024. It’s unlikely that a deal will be made while he is still competing in the tournament. However, Belgium’s recent 1-0 loss to Slovakia might impact their chances in the competition and potentially affect transfer negotiations.
