Federal High Court in Lagos Delivers Thunderous Verdict on Social Media Celebrity’s Naira Abuse Case
In a dramatic legal turn of events, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced the controversial figure Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, to six months in jail with no option of a fine.
The courtroom was rocked by the thunderous verdict on the morning of Friday, April 12, sending shockwaves across social media platforms.
The sentencing stems from Bobrisky’s arrest on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Pinnock Estate in Lagos state, where the social media celebrity was accused of abusing the Nigerian currency during actress and filmmaker Eniola Ajao’s Ajakaju movie premiere. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Bobrisky on six counts, including four charges related to naira abuse and two counts of alleged money laundering.
During the proceedings, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the first four counts concerning naira abuse, prompting Justice Abimbola Awogboro to strike out counts five and six at the request of the EFCC’s counsel.
Following the sentencing, Bobrisky was returned to EFCC custody, and the case was adjourned until April 9. However, due to public holidays declared by the federal government for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, the trial was delayed until Friday, April 12.
Bobrisky, who claims to be Nigeria’s first transgender individual and has courted controversy numerous times, once revealed having undergone a gender transition after 25 years of identifying as a man. The social media celebrity has often been in the spotlight for her outspokenness and unconventional lifestyle, attracting both admirers and critics alike.
