Courtois Extends Real Madrid Stay: Veteran Goalkeeper Signs New One-Year Deal

Belgian Shot-Stopper Commits Future Until 2027, Eyes “Dream” Retirement at Bernabéu

Real Madrid’s preparations for the 2025/26 season have received another boost as Thibaut Courtois has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until June 2027.

The Belgian goalkeeper’s future had been under mild speculation earlier in the transfer window, with Real Madrid briefly linked to Espanyol’s Joan García—who later joined Barcelona. However, Courtois has now silenced any doubts by reaffirming his loyalty to Los Blancos.

Reports from Marca confirm that the 33-year-old will not receive a longer deal despite recent whispers of a potential performance-based extension until 2028. Real Madrid strictly adhere to a policy of offering only 12-month renewals to players over 32, and Courtois is no exception.

Before the FIFA Club World Cup, the towering shot-stopper made his intentions clear, telling reporters: “I hope I can renew. I’m very happy at Real Madrid—playing here is a dream, and every year that passes is another dream. I’m at the club’s complete disposal. They know I want to stay here… and hopefully retire here. But now it’s time to prove myself on the pitch. The rest will be easy to resolve.”

Since his 2018 move from Chelsea, Courtois has been a pillar of stability, making 228 appearances and playing a key role in multiple trophy triumphs. Now, under new manager Xabi Alonso, he remains a vital part of Real Madrid’s plans as they gear up for another ambitious campaign.

With his future secured, Courtois can focus on what he does best—keeping clean sheets and chasing more silverware in the famous white jersey.
