Ukrainian Goalkeeper Set to Remain at Madrid Despite Contract Uncertainty
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin will remain with the club for the upcoming season, despite reported interest from other clubs, including Liverpool.
Real Madrid boasts one of the most talented squads in world football, with multiple world-class players across various positions. Last season, when Thibaut Courtois was sidelined due to injury, Lunin stepped up and delivered impressive performances in his absence.
However, with Courtois now back to full fitness and reclaiming his position as the number one goalkeeper, there have been questions about Lunin’s future at the club. Liverpool, in particular, has been linked with a move for the 24-year-old goalkeeper, with reports suggesting that manager Arne Slot was keen on signing Lunin earlier in the transfer window.
Lunin’s contract with Real Madrid is set to expire at the end of the season, and several clubs across Europe have been reportedly eyeing his signature. Despite this, Ancelotti has made it clear that Lunin will not be leaving the Spanish giants this season.
“Lunin will stay at Real Madrid. He will not leave the club,” Ancelotti confirmed to reporters following Real Madrid’s victory over Real Valladolid.
While Lunin is expected to remain with Real Madrid for now, it seems likely that he could leave the club on a free transfer in 2025 unless he agrees to a new contract. Meanwhile, Liverpool appears to be closing in on a deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, with plans to loan him back to the Spanish club for the season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool and Valencia are in the final stages of negotiating a deal for Mamardashvili, which is expected to be worth around £25 million. Liverpool’s current number one, Alisson, has welcomed the idea of bringing in a new goalkeeper as part of the club’s long-term planning.
“The club needs to prepare for the future,” Alisson told The Times. “We are not going to last forever here. I still have much to give, but the club is doing the right thing by planning ahead.”
As the transfer window nears its close, it remains to be seen whether Lunin will extend his stay at Madrid or seek new opportunities elsewhere next summer.
