The Norwegian star reflects on his historic 100th Premier League goal and a wild 5-4 win over Fulham, insisting the numbers are simply his job.
On a night of pure Premier League chaos, Erling Haaland made his own piece of serene history. The Manchester City striker scored his 100th top-flight goal in a record-shattering 111 games, a milestone that framed a breathtaking 5-4 victory over a dogged Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Yet, for the man who has redefined goalscoring efficiency, the personal landmark was met with characteristic bluntness. “People should criticise me if I don’t [deliver great numbers],” Haaland stated after the match. “That’s normally what people do, so in the end, I should deliver.”
The game itself was a fittingly dramatic backdrop for the achievement. Haaland, who had rattled the post early on, coolly opened the scoring to reach his century, beating Alan Shearer’s 29-year-old record by 13 games. He wasn’t done, turning provider with assists for Tijjani Reijnders and Phil Foden as City raced into a seemingly unassailable 5-1 lead.
But Fulham, inspired by substitute Samuel Chukwueze, staged a heroic comeback, scoring three late goals to set up a heart-stopping finale. City’s defense, stretched to its limit, just managed to hold on, securing three vital points that cut Arsenal’s lead at the top to two points.
“For me, it’s about winning,” Haaland told Sky Sports, shifting focus from his record to the team’s form. “The reality is we lost against Newcastle and Leverkusen and now we’ve won two in a row. We need to keep going.”
His manager, Pep Guardiola, praised the striker’s “unbelievable” performance but joked about the nerve-shredding finish. “I’m so old, and the players don’t respect me!” he quipped to Match of the Day. “It was a question of character, resilience, and defense in the end. They did what they had to do.”
Haaland, now the 35th member of the Premier League’s ‘100 Club’, has his sights set on the next targets: Mohamed Salah’s 190 goals for a foreign player and, ultimately, Shearer’s all-time record of 260. For now, his message is clear: the job is never done, and the numbers are just the beginning of the conversation.
