Former Spain star Gaizka Mendieta believes the legendary goalkeeper, now impressing in Italy, would “consider” a dramatic Old Trafford homecoming.
In a twist that would thrill a generation of fans, David De Gea could be open to a sensational return to Manchester United, according to his former international teammate Gaizka Mendieta. The speculation ignites as United’s search for consistent goalkeeping continues, two years after his emotional departure.
De Gea, a beloved figure who made over 500 appearances for the club, saw his 12-year tenure at Old Trafford end in 2023 when the club decided not to renew his contract. After a year away from the game, the 34-year-old signed with Serie A’s Fiorentina, stating, “I received many offers but I wanted to play in Italy… Many people wanted to see me return to action, which is a good sign.”
His replacement, Andre Onana, struggled to fill the void, eventually losing his starting role and being loaned to a Turkish club. This has left United exploring options, with a report from The Sun suggesting the club made discreet inquiries about a potential De Gea comeback.
Now, Mendieta has added fuel to the fire. “I’m sure he would consider it,” the former Spain star told OLBG. “He was very happy there, he enjoyed being at a club like United.” Mendieta also praised De Gea’s current form, calling him “the best goalkeeper in the Italian league” and asserting he remains among the world’s best.
The possibility was hinted at by De Gea himself after a pre-season friendly at his old home. Following a rapturous reception from the Old Trafford crowd, he posted a heartfelt message on social media: “A magical moment for me and my family to come back to my home… To the supporters that never stopped being with me… Our paths may cross again. We’ve seen it all.”
With the door left firmly ajar, the prospect of De Gea once again guarding the United net is no longer just a fan’s dream, but a tantalizing possibility.
