The French midfielder could make a stunning comeback under Ruben Amorim.
Former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna has suggested that Paul Pogba might be on the verge of a remarkable return to Manchester United. Pogba, 31, recently ended his second stint at Juventus, parting ways with the club after a turbulent period marred by injuries and a doping suspension.
A Challenging Period in Turin
Pogba’s two seasons at Juventus were far from ideal, with the midfielder making only 12 appearances across all competitions. His time in Italy was overshadowed by a four-year doping ban handed down in September 2023. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later reduced his suspension to 18 months, citing that his use of the banned substance was unintentional.
Now, eligible to resume training in January and return to competitive action by March, Pogba’s potential has reignited discussions about his next move.
Sagna: “Pogba Loves United”
Speaking to Mega Dice, Sagna, a former teammate of Pogba in the French national team, expressed optimism about a reunion between Pogba and Manchester United under new manager Ruben Amorim.
“It’s a different situation today at Manchester United compared to when Paul was last there,” Sagna noted. “United now have a young coach, a coach who has been a player and understands these situations. Amorim might welcome Paul back because he loves the club.”
Sagna also reflected on Pogba’s passion for United, saying, “I’ve spoken to Paul many times—he loves United. His last spell didn’t go as planned, but he wasn’t the only one who struggled during that time.”
Midfield Struggles Highlight Pogba’s Potential Role
Manchester United’s current midfield situation could pave the way for Pogba’s return. In Sunday’s match against Ipswich Town, manager Amorim opted for Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in midfield. Both were substituted during the second half as United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw, emphasizing ongoing concerns in that area.
Pogba’s history at Old Trafford is a mix of highs and lows. After joining United’s academy as a 16-year-old in 2009, he left three years later seeking regular playing time. His £90 million return to the club in 2016 broke transfer records, and he went on to score 39 goals in 226 games, winning the Europa League and EFL Cup in the 2016/17 season. However, inconsistency and injuries prevented him from fully justifying his price tag.
A Fresh Start?
With Amorim’s arrival signaling a new chapter for United, Sagna believes the club could offer Pogba a fresh start. The prospect of Pogba’s creative flair and experience returning to United could address the team’s midfield challenges—if both parties are willing to take the leap.
As January approaches, the possibility of Pogba’s comeback is likely to spark debate among fans and pundits alike, marking what could be a pivotal moment in the French star’s career.
