Renowned Afrobeats artist David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has revealed that his possession of an American passport has provided him with a significant edge in his music career. The singer emphasized that his passport holds immense value, surpassing a million dollars in worth.
Davido shared this revelation during a recent interview with Omega. He explained that when some of his band members encounter difficulties with visa approvals, his American passport always grants him an advantage. However, he also expressed pride in his Nigerian nationality.
The artist reflected on how the revelation of his foreign background only emerged after he achieved fame. Many people initially believed he resided solely in Nigeria. It was later in his career that the public became aware of his time spent in Alabama for college and other experiences in the United States.
Davido clarified that he was not introduced as an American artist in Nigeria and emphasized his strong connection to his Nigerian roots. Despite his international travels, he has always remained deeply involved in the streets of his home country. However, he acknowledged the convenience his American passport affords him, enabling him to travel to the United States whenever he desires.
He went on to emphasize the extraordinary value of the blue passport, stating, “Till date, I don’t care how much money you’ve got, that blue passport is worth more than a million dollars.” Davido cited an example of the challenges his band faced while preparing for a tour in Australia. Obtaining the necessary documentation proved to be arduous for some members due to their passports. In contrast, Davido found the process relatively easier due to his possession of the coveted blue passport.
The influence of his American citizenship on his music career highlights the significance of mobility and access in the global entertainment industry. While maintaining his Nigerian identity, Davido recognizes the unique opportunities and privileges afforded by his American passport, demonstrating how factors beyond talent can impact an artist’s trajectory.
As Davido continues to navigate his successful music journey, his experiences serve as a testament to the complexities of the global music landscape and the advantages that certain passports can provide within it.
