Stampede and Chaos Follow Controversial Referee Decision in Nzerekore

Nzerekore, Guinea—Dozens of lives were tragically lost in a violent clash between rival football fans during a local tournament in the southern Guinean city of Nzerekore. The chaos unfolded on Sunday afternoon during a match between the Labe and Nzerekore teams, held in honor of Guinea’s military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya.

Reports indicate that the violence was triggered by a controversial referee decision that awarded a penalty against the visiting Labe team. Local outlet MediaGuinee stated that the ruling sparked outrage among supporters, leading to a pitch invasion and escalating tensions. Security forces reportedly used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd, further fueling the turmoil.

Witness accounts and harrowing footage on social media revealed scenes of panic as fans scrambled to escape, some scaling walls in desperation. A witness told AFP, “It all started with a contested decision by the referee. Then fans invaded the pitch.”

Medical sources described a grim situation at the local hospital. Speaking anonymously to AFP, a doctor reported that “there are around 100 dead,” with bodies overflowing from the morgue into hallways. “There are bodies lined up as far as the eye can see,” the doctor said.

Guinean Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah confirmed the tragedy, acknowledging fatalities and promising a thorough investigation. “The government will publish a press release once all the relevant information has been collected,” he stated on social media platform X.

This is not the first time Guinea has faced a tragedy at a public gathering. The country’s history bears the scars of a 2009 massacre at Conakry Stadium, where more than 150 people were killed and numerous others assaulted during a political rally.
