EFCC Interrogates Fayemi Over Alleged Misappropriation of N4bn

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday grilled a former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, over alleged money laundering and misappropriation of N4bn.

Fayemi, who was also Minister of Mines and Steel Development during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s first term, was still being interrogated as of 7:15pm at the Ilorin zonal command of the EFCC located at Oko Close, Off Station Road, Ilorin.

He was said to have arrived there at about 10am.

An EFCC official told Daily Trust that  Fayemi was not arrested, but honoured the invitation earlier extended to him, saying he would likely be released last night or this morning.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that Fayemi was with the commission.

“He’s in Ilorin zonal office answering questions, but I won’t make further comments on that,” Uwujaren told Daily Trust via telephone.

The EFCC had, in a letter dated May 12, 2023, invited Fayemi to its Kwara office on May 18 over allegations bordering on money laundering and misappropriation of public funds.

The letter, signed by ACE 1 Michael Nzekwe, stated: “The commission is investigating a case of money laundering in which there is need to seek certain clarification from you has become imperative.

“In view of this, you are kindly requested to come for an interview with the undersigned through the head, Economic Governance Section. Thursday, May 18, 2023. No. 10 Oko close, off Station Road, GRA, Ilorin, Kwara. Time: 10: 00 hours.”

Meanwhile, EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, for the second time in 24 hours, visited the Presidential Villa to brief President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on activities of the commission.
