Tech Billionaire Criticizes Democratic Stance on Free Speech After Heated Vice-Presidential Debate
Elon Musk has accused the US Democratic Party of attempting to censor citizens’ free speech by disguising their actions as efforts to combat hate speech and misinformation. His criticism came in the wake of Tuesday’s vice-presidential debate between Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, representing the Democrats, and Republican Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate.
During the debate, Walz argued that hate speech, threatening language, and misinformation are not protected under the First Amendment. He referenced the 1919 Supreme Court ruling that famously stated, “You can’t yell ‘fire’ in a crowded theater,” to justify limits on free speech.
Musk, a vocal advocate for free expression, responded on his social media platform X, claiming that the Democratic Party “openly wants to take your freedom of speech under the guise of what THEY deem to be ‘hate.’”
Vance, meanwhile, emphasized that censorship, particularly by Big Tech, poses a greater threat to democracy than recent events such as the January 6 Capitol riots. He accused the Biden-Harris administration of silencing dissenting voices, including those criticizing government policies during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The debate has reignited discussions on the balance between free speech and regulating harmful content, with Musk positioning himself as a defender of unfiltered expression.
