The Manager Addresses Defensive Lapses and Looks Ahead to Crucial Bayern Munich Clash
Manchester United’s stunning collapse against Galatasaray in the Champions League has left manager Erik ten Hag pointing fingers at himself, identifying the defensive lapses that led to a 3-3 draw on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils appeared to be in control of the match with a comfortable 3-1 lead courtesy of goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, and Scott McTominay. However, a series of defensive errors, including a notable blunder from goalkeeper Andre Onana on a Hakim Ziyech free-kick, allowed the Turkish side to mount a comeback and secure a draw.
In a post-match interview with TNT Sports (via The Mirror), Ten Hag offered his assessment of the game, expressing both satisfaction and criticism for his team’s performance. “We were winning and then we’re losing it. We should have taken three points; that’s clear. I was pleased with how we played, but at the same time, I have to criticize the team because the defending is not good enough,” he stated.
Highlighting specific instances that led to Galatasaray’s goals, the Dutchman acknowledged the need for improvement in critical moments. “Every goal has its own story. Whether it’s a transition moment and we don’t block the middle or the second goal, which is a free-kick, and the third goal, we are organized but have an overload. That cannot happen. We have to learn from that,” he emphasized.
When pressed on who was to blame for the 3-3 implosion, Ten Hag took responsibility, stating, “It’s always me. I am responsible for this. We know we are in a project. We are making improvements, so that’s very hopeful. We are going in the right direction, so I know we will be successful in the long term, but if you want to stay in the Champions League, you need to win these games.”
With the draw leaving Manchester United in a precarious position in the Champions League group stage, Ten Hag now faces the challenge of regrouping his squad ahead of a crucial encounter against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in two weeks. The outcome of that match will determine their qualification for the knockout rounds, adding immense pressure to the upcoming fixture.
