Norwegian Star’s Deal Highlights Contract Trends Amid Comparisons to La Liga’s Eye-Watering Clauses
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has signed a groundbreaking nine-and-a-half-year contract extension, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2034. The deal not only solidifies Haaland’s future with the Premier League champions but also includes a monumental release clause of £250 million, which can be triggered starting in 2029.
A Record-Breaking Clause
While £250 million surpasses Neymar’s world-record £200 million transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, it pales in comparison to the astronomical release clauses of players at Barcelona and Real Madrid. For instance, Jude Bellingham’s release clause at Real Madrid is reported to be an unprecedented £871 million. Similar clauses are embedded in contracts of other La Liga stars, such as Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Eduardo Camavinga, as well as Barcelona players including Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araújo.
These sky-high figures are part of a growing trend in European football, with clubs inserting massive release clauses to safeguard their top talent from being poached at reduced prices.
Haaland’s Improved Terms
Haaland’s new contract reportedly increases his weekly wages from £375,000 to £500,000, excluding bonuses and image rights. The 24-year-old expressed his enthusiasm for remaining with City, stating:
“I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club. Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters, and it’s the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.”
Context and Controversy
The timing of Haaland’s deal has sparked debate, as Manchester City faces 115 charges related to Financial Fair Play irregularities. Potential consequences include substantial fines and even relegation if the club is found guilty.
Despite the off-field controversies, Haaland’s on-field contributions remain stellar. The Norwegian striker has scored an impressive 111 goals in 126 appearances since joining City and secured the Premier League Golden Boot in his first two seasons. This season, however, he trails Mohamed Salah in the race for the award.
As Haaland continues to cement his legacy in English football, his contract reflects both his immense value to Manchester City and the broader evolution of financial safeguards in elite European clubs.
