Guardiola Faces More Setbacks as City’s Struggles Persist
In a major blow to Manchester City’s January transfer plans, German playmaker Florian Wirtz is reportedly close to extending his contract with Bayer Leverkusen. The 21-year-old, long linked to top clubs like City and Bayern Munich, is seen as a generational talent. However, it seems he will remain under Xabi Alonso’s guidance at Leverkusen for the foreseeable future.
Leverkusen Determined to Retain Their Star
Currently under contract until 2027, Wirtz is expected to sign an extension, according to German outlet Kicker. This move would solidify his commitment to Leverkusen, who are eager to retain their rising star despite interest from Europe’s elite. The club’s strong financial position, bolstered by a successful Champions League campaign that has brought in €66 million in revenue, allows them to meet Wirtz’s salary demands, reportedly lower than the €20 million per year he might command elsewhere.
Leverkusen’s stance comes as City struggles with a rough patch, winning just one of their last 11 matches across all competitions, including a recent 2-1 derby loss to Manchester United. Pep Guardiola’s side hoped to make significant reinforcements in the January transfer window, with Wirtz at the top of their list.
A Stellar Season for Wirtz
Wirtz has been in sensational form this season, netting 11 goals and providing five assists across all competitions. His Champions League performances have been particularly impressive, scoring five times in six appearances. Valued at an estimated €96.8 million, Wirtz’s on-field brilliance and work ethic have earned him praise as a “total package” of footballing skill and determination.
Guardiola has acknowledged the urgent need to revamp his squad, but with Wirtz likely off the table, the Premier League champions will need to look elsewhere for solutions.
