Nollywood Star Reveals Singer’s Role in Sustaining Popular Franchise
Nollywood actress Funke Akindele, popularly known as Jenifa, recently shared how singer Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, also known as D’banj, played a pivotal role in encouraging her to keep her successful Jenifa brand alive.
Speaking at D’banj’s 20th anniversary celebration in the entertainment industry, the award-winning actress recounted her first encounter with the singer at a club. During their conversation, D’banj asked her if she was planning to continue the Jenifa series, which he adored. When she said no, he was surprised and emphasized how lucrative the Jenifa brand was, urging her to continue developing it.
To show his support, D’banj even gave her money to work on new sequels, which led to the creation of “The Return of Jenifa.” Funke Akindele shared:
“After the big break with Jenifa, everyone loved Jenifa so much. I was out there, and everyone was celebrating me. I met D’banj for the first time at a club, and he gave me his number. He asked if there was a sequel to Jenifa, and I said no. He questioned why, noting how Jenifa is a brand I can rely on for the rest of my life. He told me to feed on the brand, milk it well, and make money out of it. He even gave me money and supported me to write another Jenifa.”
Akindele praised D’banj for being more than just a musician, highlighting how his music has brought joy to many and stating that his legacy will endure. She added:
“D’banj, you’re more than just a musician; you’re a movement! Your music has brought joy to our hearts, and your legacy will live on forever.”
