Gary Neville Slams Manchester United as “Worst Pound-for-Pound Team” After Newcastle Defeat

Red Devils’ Struggles Deepen Following 2-0 Loss at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s dismal season took another blow on Monday night as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, prompting fierce criticism from former club captain Gary Neville. Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton sealed a comfortable win for Eddie Howe’s Magpies, leaving the Red Devils in 14th place in the Premier League table, just seven points above the relegation zone.

Neville, speaking during his commentary for Sky Sports, didn’t hold back in his assessment, labeling United as the “worst pound-for-pound team in the country.” He described the match as a “mauling” for Manchester United and criticized the team’s lackluster performance and questionable lineup.

“When you saw the Manchester United starting XI, you had to think it would be very difficult for this team to play well,” Neville remarked. “The two wing-backs aren’t very good in the attacking part of the pitch. The two central midfielders can’t run. The back three have no legs. [Joshua] Zirkzee has no balance off [Rasmus] Hojlund. You only really have Amad [Diallo] who you think might do something.”

Neville also highlighted Newcastle’s dominance, saying, “Newcastle are hammering Manchester United. This is a mauling. They are having the time of their lives out there. They should be three or four up.”

The former defender expressed concerns over Manchester United’s defensive disorganization, noting, “The amount of changes Manchester United make to their back five in game and from game to game is incredible.”

Neville singled out a few players who have shown promise under manager Ruben Amorim, naming Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, and Amad Diallo. However, he criticized the team’s overall cohesion and the inability of key players to rise to the occasion.

The defeat marks United’s fourth loss in their last five matches, as pressure mounts on Amorim to steer the team away from the relegation zone. With a challenging schedule ahead, including a trip to league leaders Liverpool, the Red Devils must regroup quickly to salvage their season.
