Arsenal are facing a transfer dilemma with a player out of contract in 2024 while Manchester City have ‘upset’ one of their Champions League rivals. Here’s some Gossip to make your Monday morning a little bit better…
TURKISH GIANTS WANT JORGINHO
Jorginho split opinion during his time at Chelsea so it was understandable when Arsenal fans aggressively questioned Mikel Arteta’s decision to sign the Italian midfielder on deadline day in the 2023 winter transfer window. Amazingly, he has quickly become a fan favourite. Fingers crossed the same happens for Kai Havertz.
Arsenal will be without Thomas Partey for a few weeks – at the very least – and even though he did not feature against Manchester United on Sunday, it would be a shock to see Jorginho leave the club in the next week or so.
The Turkish transfer window remains open and Fenerbahce are reportedly keen on signing the ex-Chelsea midfielder, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
According to Ajansspor journalist Arda Birben, the Super Lig side want a new No. 6 and have made Jorginho their top target. It is noted that Real Betis’ Guido Rodriguez and Leicester City’s Wilfried Ndidi are also on their shortlist.
Given that Jorginho was brought to the Emirates to cover when Partey inevitably gets injured, Arteta is unlikely to sanction this sale, unless he is happy the addition of Declan Rice has bolstered his midfield enough (it hasn’t).
MAN CITY ‘UPSET’ BARCELONA
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are ‘very upset’ with Manchester City, even though the English club gave them Joao Cancelo.
Why are they upset, I hear you cry. Well, the European champions did not consider selling them Bernardo Silva – a vitally important player under Pep Guardiola who has just signed a new contract – and also tried to sign young talents Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and Pau Cubarsi.
There is no mention of City using underhand tactics to sign the players, just that they ‘tried’ to make it happen. What b*stards!
Yamal, 16, has been called up to Spain’s senior squad for the international break and looks like the next big thing in Catalonia. This is Barcelona we are talking about, so it is safe to assume he will be there until he turns 33 and they can’t afford to give him a new contract.
The report adds that Guardiola’s side only allowed Cancelo to join Barca on loan if the La Liga champions agreed to loan ex-City defender Eric Garcia to their sister club, Girona.
ROMANO REFUTES SPURS CLAIM
It was reported on deadline day that Tottenham lodged a £40million bid to sign Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher as Ange Postecoglou desperately searched for a new central midfielder.
This was not the case, however, says transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said reports of a bid are “not true” as Spurs had not agreed a deal to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. If they did do that, either to Fulham or Atletico Madrid, they might have moved forward in their pursuit of Gallagher.
“Atletico Madrid presented a verbal proposal for Hojbjerg but it was a loan with an option to buy, not obligation,” Romano said.
“And for Tottenham, it was impossible to accept the proposal. So, the Hojbjerg deal collapsed around lunchtime and so Tottenham never presented a bid for Conor Gallagher.”
