“We Cannot Think About These Things,” Says Boss as Winless Run Hits Three Matches
Pep Guardiola delivered a sobering assessment of Manchester City’s fading title hopes on Wednesday night, admitting his side “cannot think about” catching Arsenal after a 1-1 draw with Brighton extended their winless run to three matches.
The City boss watched his team dominate possession and chances at the Etihad, only to be undone by familiar failings in front of goal. Despite Erling Haaland scoring his 150th club goal from the penalty spot, the Norwegian and his teammates squandered several clear opportunities before Kaoru Mitoma’s second-half strike earned Brighton a deserved point.
“The result is the result,” a philosophical Guardiola said afterward. “I love a lot the way we played, but we don’t score goals. There are too many clear chances. That is the reason why we could not win the games.”
The draw leaves City five points behind leaders Arsenal, who can stretch that gap to eight with a win over Liverpool on Thursday. Guardiola’s side have now dropped points against Chelsea, Sunderland, and Brighton in the past 10 days, exposing a worrying lack of cutting edge.
“Of course, if you don’t win games, we cannot think about these things,” Guardiola replied when asked about the title race, his tone reflecting the growing reality of the situation.
The match was also marked by touchline tension, with Guardiola booked for protesting a penalty decision and exchanging words with Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler. The penalty—awarded after a VAR review for a foul on Jérémy Doku—was converted by Haaland, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory.
With a defensive injury crisis and an attack that has suddenly lost its ruthlessness, City’s season is at a crossroads. A potential move for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo could provide a spark, but Guardiola remained tight-lipped on transfers.
For now, the message from the Etihad is clear: unless City rediscover their clinical edge, the Premier League trophy will be headed elsewhere.
