Inter Milan has launched a scathing attack on Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, accusing him of betrayal in a recent statement. The club’s frustration stems from the complex transfer dealings involving Lukaku, who was previously a pivotal figure for Inter.
Lukaku’s connection with Inter Milan has been tumultuous, marked by highs and lows. He played a crucial role in the club’s Serie A success during the 2020/21 season, scoring an impressive 24 goals. However, his departure to Chelsea for a staggering €113 million caused a stir, leading fans to hope for his eventual return.
The Belgian striker did indeed return to San Siro on loan in 2022 but failed to replicate his previous season’s success, netting only 10 league goals. Inter had been eager to secure his permanent signature, but their aspirations were dashed when it was revealed that Lukaku was engaged in undisclosed transfer negotiations with arch-rivals Juventus.
This revelation led to Inter Milan cutting off all communication with the striker. Fans were left disappointed and angered by Lukaku’s behavior, which seemed to disregard the club’s values and his own past connection with them.
Sporting director Javier Zanetti has expressed the club’s disappointment and frustration in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. He openly condemned Lukaku’s actions, stating, “Lukaku has betrayed us. We’re very disappointed. We expected completely different behavior by Romelu, as a professional but also as a man.”
Zanetti’s remarks have garnered significant attention in Italy, with Gazzetta featuring the quote prominently on their cover. The situation highlights the depth of disappointment that Inter Milan feels towards a player who was once celebrated as a hero.
In light of Lukaku’s actions, Inter Milan is now exploring alternative transfer options. They have expressed interest in Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun, although the potential cost of the transfer could prove prohibitive. Other reports suggest that the club may consider a bid for Porto striker Mehdi Taremi, who had also been briefly linked to Manchester United earlier in the transfer window.
