Simone Inzaghi’s potential move to Manchester United is clouded by a police probe into mafia ties involving Inter Milan ultras.
Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi has been questioned by police in connection with an ongoing investigation into mafia-related activities, just days after being named a potential successor to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. According to Italian news agency Ansa, Inzaghi was interviewed as part of a broader probe into alleged violence, intimidation, and criminal behavior by Inter and AC Milan ultras groups.
The investigation centers on accusations that both clubs have provided “illicit concessions,” including tickets sold to individuals linked to criminal organizations, who then resold them at a significant markup. The funds are allegedly being funneled to mafia families.
Inzaghi is reportedly implicated due to a meeting with Marco Ferdico, an ultra leader, where he was asked to use his influence to secure an additional 200 tickets for the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul. The coach is said to have agreed to discuss the request with Inter’s leadership.
Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti, former player Milan Skriniar (now with PSG), and AC Milan captain Davide Calabria are also reportedly under scrutiny. While neither Inter Milan nor AC Milan are formally under investigation, both clubs are under pressure to prove they have severed ties with the ultras involved.
The ongoing investigation could cast a shadow over Inzaghi’s future, particularly as he is seen as a serious contender for the Manchester United managerial position.
