Controversy surrounding Mbappe escalates after his omission from the national team and night out in Stockholm.
Former Paris Saint-Germain attacker Jerome Rothen has publicly urged France head coach Didier Deschamps to remove Kylian Mbappe as the national team’s captain. The call comes amid growing controversy following Mbappe’s exclusion from the latest France squad due to injury.
Mbappe, sidelined with an injury last month, was left out of Deschamps’ roster for the international fixtures. However, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti deemed the 25-year-old fit enough to play 70 minutes last weekend, sparking outrage among French supporters who questioned Mbappe’s commitment and fitness. The situation intensified when Mbappe was seen partying in Stockholm, Sweden, despite being expected to rest and recover.
Mbappe’s trip has fueled criticism, with Rothen, now a pundit, weighing in on the situation. On his RMC show Rothen s’enflamme, Rothen expressed his frustration, accusing Mbappe of acting as though he is “untouchable.”
“The player Kylian Mbappe feels untouchable, above everything. There is no self-reflection,” Rothen said. He criticized both Mbappe’s decision to party during a critical time and Deschamps’ handling of the situation, saying, “Didier Deschamps’ communication on the Kylian Mbappe case has been catastrophic.”
Rothen further claimed that Mbappe’s behavior sends the wrong message to the French team and the public. He urged Deschamps to take decisive action by stripping Mbappe of the captain’s armband, adding, “What happened shows that he is above everything, above Didier Deschamps. But I ask Didier Deschamps: accept your responsibilities, take the armband off him.”
The controversy continues to swirl around the Real Madrid star, with many questioning whether he remains the best choice to lead the French national team.
