Syrian Army confirms the fall of President Assad’s regime as jihadist forces seize the capital.
Damascus is reportedly under the control of jihadist forces following a swift offensive that has marked the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year reign. The Syrian Army confirmed the development on Sunday, with a military officer stating that Assad’s government has collapsed, according to Reuters.
“Damascus Is Free”
Anti-government sources revealed that the jihadists, led by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), declared the city “free of Assad.” The group is expected to make its first public address via state television, now under their control.
Ahmed Al-Sharaa, a senior HTS commander, has issued directives to prevent militant forces from approaching government institutions or engaging in celebratory gunfire, emphasizing a need for order during the transition.
“Government institutions will remain under the supervision of the former prime minister until officially handed over to the new authorities,” Al-Sharaa announced.
Leadership Transition
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad al-Jalali expressed his readiness to support the incoming leadership, emphasizing continuity and stability. Speaking to Al Jazeera, he stated:
“I am prepared to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the people. For now, I remain at home and committed to ensuring the continuity of government.”
Rapid Offensive and Uncertain Future
The fall of Damascus followed a weekend of intense fighting as HTS fighters and allied militias entered the capital. Their advance signals a significant shift in Syria’s ongoing conflict.
Flight tracking data suggests that President Assad has fled the city, although his destination remains unclear.
The collapse of Assad’s regime raises questions about Syria’s future leadership and stability. With jihadist forces now in control, the nation faces an uncertain path forward as regional and international stakeholders closely monitor the evolving situation.
