New United manager Ruben Amorim plans to part ways with Zirkzee, aiming to strengthen the attack with Sporting Lisbon’s star striker Gyokeres.
Manchester United’s new manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly planning to offload Joshua Zirkzee and bring in Sporting Lisbon’s prolific striker, Viktor Gyokeres. According to Calciomercato, Amorim is eager to sign Gyokeres at the end of the season, aiming to reunite with the player who has soared to become one of Europe’s most sought-after center-forwards. The Swedish forward has notched a remarkable 66 goals since last season, firmly establishing himself as a prime target for top clubs.
Zirkzee’s short stint at Old Trafford has been challenging. Arriving from Bologna in a €42.5 million transfer this past summer, the Dutch striker made a strong start with a goal on his Premier League debut against Fulham. However, he has since struggled to regain his form, failing to score again and gradually slipping down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag and now Amorim.
With Rasmus Hojlund expected to stay on as competition for Gyokeres, Zirkzee is likely headed for a mid-season departure. Although a January loan move is the probable outcome, rumors suggest Juventus may be interested, given Zirkzee’s success last season under Thiago Motta at Bologna. Zirkzee played a pivotal role in Bologna’s unexpected qualification for the Champions League, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions.
The towering 6’4” forward was known at Bologna for his ability to hold up play and link with teammates, drawing comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimović. However, his transition to the Premier League has yet to yield similar results. Although he featured for the Netherlands in Euro 2024 under Ronald Koeman, Zirkzee had limited playing time.
For Amorim, securing Gyokeres would align with his tactical approach and bolster United’s attack with a proven scorer, bringing fresh hope to fans for a more dynamic offensive lineup as the club looks ahead to the new season.
