UEFA Investigates Bellingham’s Gesture During England’s Win Over Slovakia
Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid star and hero of England’s dramatic victory over Slovakia, is under investigation by UEFA for a gesture he made after scoring.
In Sunday’s round of 16 match, England came from behind to secure a 2-1 win, with Bellingham equalizing in the fifth minute of injury time with an impressive overhead kick.
Harry Kane then scored the winner early in extra time. England will now face Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday, but there are concerns that Bellingham might miss the game due to the investigation.
Bellingham’s gesture, which some suggest was directed at the opposition bench, has sparked controversy.
However, Bellingham insists it was just a joke meant for friends in the stands. He addressed the issue on social media, saying, “Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”
Despite his explanation, UEFA has launched a probe into the matter. This has led to fears that Bellingham could be suspended for the upcoming game against Switzerland. However, The Mirror reports that a suspension is unlikely. They noted that decisions on such cases are not made quickly, referencing an ongoing investigation into Serbia for an alleged racial abuse incident that has yet to be resolved.
Bellingham will maintain his stance that the gesture was an inside joke when he explains himself to UEFA. The governing body has sent a letter to the England camp seeking a formal explanation, giving Bellingham three days to respond.
Bellingham isn’t the only player under scrutiny at Euro 2024. Turkey’s Merih Demiral is also being investigated for making a ‘Wolf’s Salute’, a gesture linked to the far-right extremist group Grey Wolves, during Turkey’s win over Austria.
