Kevin De Bruyne Explains Delay in Contract Talks Amid Future Speculation

Man City star addresses injury struggles, Saudi interest, and potential summer exit.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has shed light on why contract talks with the club have stalled, as speculation about his future continues to swirl. The Belgian international, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been linked with a potential move away, including interest from Saudi Arabian clubs.

Injury Delays Contract Discussions

De Bruyne, 33, revealed that injuries have been a major factor in delaying discussions about his future at the Etihad Stadium. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, he said:
“At the start of the season, I knew talks would happen, but then the injury against Brentford happened. It was supposed to be a couple of days, and then it became eight or nine weeks. I put it all to the side.

“I need to be back on the pitch and be myself again. There’s no rush. I don’t feel uncomfortable or worried.”

De Bruyne has missed significant time this season due to the injury and insists that his focus remains on returning to full fitness before addressing his future.

Open to All Options

The midfield maestro also commented on the lure of a potential move to Saudi Arabia, where clubs have shown interest in signing him. Earlier this year, rumors circulated that De Bruyne had even agreed on personal terms with a Saudi club. While no move materialized, the Belgian hinted at the appeal of such a transfer.

“At my age, you have to be open to everything. You’re talking about incredible amounts of money at what may be the end of my career. If I play there for two years, I could earn an incredible amount of money.

“Before that, I had to play football for 15 years. I may not even reach that amount yet. It’s something to think about in the future.”

Guardiola’s Influence

When asked whether Pep Guardiola’s recent contract renewal could impact his own decision, De Bruyne acknowledged the stability it brings but remained pragmatic.

“It could help. I know how Pep works with the team and the players. If there were a new coach, you’d have to discuss things, but with Pep, there’s nothing new to me.”

He added, “Questions will come, but I can only give the answers I have right now. Talks will come. If they don’t, this will be my last year. I just want to play good football.”

Speculation on a Summer Exit

Reports have suggested that De Bruyne is one of three key City players potentially departing next summer. However, the player has emphasized his commitment to focusing on his performance on the pitch, leaving contract talks for later.

For now, City fans can look forward to seeing De Bruyne back in action as he works toward regaining his fitness and form during a critical phase of the season.
