Bayern Munich coach stands by veteran goalkeeper despite recent errors against Barcelona
In a press conference ahead of Bayern Munich’s upcoming game against Bochum, head coach Vincent Kompany responded to recent criticism of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Bayern’s 4-1 defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday saw Neuer struggle, particularly with a failed clearance that led to one of the goals. However, Kompany emphasized that the responsibility lies with the entire team, not just Neuer.
“We lost. When we lose, we lose together – it’s not just Manu, but the whole team and coaches,” Kompany stated. He expressed confidence in Neuer’s commitment to improvement, adding, “If Manu changes his game, it’s only to get even better. Criticism is part of it, but hopefully, we can be successful against Bochum.”
Since returning from a serious leg injury in 2023, Neuer’s performances have sparked ongoing debate about his future at Bayern. The veteran’s spot is increasingly under scrutiny, especially with Bayern’s interest in younger talents. Alexander Nübel, on loan to VfB Stuttgart, has impressed with consistent performances, earning a call-up to the German national team. Additionally, Bayern is reportedly eyeing 1.FC Köln’s Jonas Urbig as another potential successor.
As Bayern heads into their match against Bochum, Neuer will look to reaffirm his place amidst discussions over the club’s long-term goalkeeping options.
