In a surprising twist for Premier League fans, Kylian Mbappe appears to have already made a pivotal decision on which English powerhouse he would prefer to join, with Arsenal reportedly leading the race ahead of Liverpool.
The uncertainty surrounding Mbappe’s future at Paris Saint-Germain escalated when he rejected a new contract offer from the Ligue 1 giants over the summer. While initially sidelined and training away from the first-team squad, the 24-year-old has not only reintegrated into the starting 11 but has also been bestowed with the captain’s armband under the new management of Luis Enrique.
Despite this, European clubs, including Premier League titans Arsenal and Liverpool, continue to be linked with the prolific forward. Real Madrid, initially seen as the frontrunners, withdrew from the race earlier this month, citing exorbitant wage demands as the deterrent.
As a result, Arsenal and Liverpool are emerging as genuine contenders for Mbappe’s coveted signature, with recent reports from The Independent suggesting that the Gunners may have the upper hand. The Emirates Stadium is purportedly Mbappe’s first preference should he decide to make the move to the Premier League.
The report indicates that Mbappe is intrigued by Mikel Arteta’s project in north London, drawing parallels with the manager’s successful pursuit of Declan Rice from West Ham over the summer. Notably, this isn’t the first time Arsenal has pursued Mbappe, as former manager Arsene Wenger reportedly made an £87 million bid for the then-19-year-old back in 2017.
Reflecting on that period, Mbappe acknowledged Wenger’s interest, stating, “We were in touch in 2017. I’d chosen a different path, and he [Wenger] didn’t hold it against me. He was a gentleman and wished me good luck.” This history adds an intriguing layer to Mbappe’s potential Premier League move, with Arsenal aiming to finally secure the star player they once courted.
