Kylian Mbappe’s Nearly Joined Liverpool

The French Star Had Agreed to a Short-Term Deal with Anfield Before PSG Rejected Offer

Kylian Mbappe’s high-profile transfer to Real Madrid this summer has taken the football world by storm, but reports now suggest that the former PSG striker was close to joining Liverpool before the move to Spain. Mbappe has signed a lucrative five-year contract with Real Madrid, worth around €15 million annually, along with a €100 million signing bonus.

According to L’Equipe, Mbappe had grown frustrated with PSG’s sporting project back in 2022, just weeks after extending his contract with the Paris club. Disappointed by the failure to sign key players like Bernardo Silva or Robert Lewandowski, he submitted a transfer request.

During this period, Liverpool reportedly made a €200 million offer to PSG for the French star. Mbappe had even agreed to a short-term contract with the Reds, which would have allowed him to eventually move to Real Madrid. However, PSG rejected Liverpool’s bid, with then-sporting director Antero Henrique stating the club would only entertain offers around €400 million.

Despite denials from PSG that Liverpool ever made a formal written offer, the situation highlights how close Mbappe came to playing under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Mbappe has publicly expressed his admiration for Klopp’s managerial style, calling Liverpool a “machine” in the Premier League during a 2020 interview with the BBC.

While Liverpool’s pursuit ultimately failed, Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid cements his position as one of the most sought-after players in world football.
