Teenage Star Accused of Poor Sportsmanship as Spain Fall Short in Dramatic Shootout
Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal has found himself at the center of a social media storm after appearing to snub Portugal’s trophy celebrations following Sunday’s heartbreaking Nations League final defeat.
The 17-year-old Barcelona winger was captured on camera removing his runner-up medal and walking straight down the tunnel after Portugal’s 5-3 penalty shootout victory, with teammate Marc Cucurella following close behind. The moment sparked outrage among fans, with many accusing the youngster of disrespect.
“Lamine Yamal refuses to clap for the Portugal team and walks away,” one fan tweeted, while another demanded: “He should be fined for that behavior.” Critics were quick to contrast his actions with the sportsmanship shown by most of his Spanish teammates, who remained on the pitch to applaud the victors.
However, others rushed to defend the teenager, pointing out his emotional exhaustion after a grueling match where he struggled against Portugal’s standout defender Nuno Mendes before being substituted in extra time. “He’s just 17—cut him some slack,” one supporter pleaded, while another argued: “Would you clap after losing a final? Be real.”
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente had already substituted Yamal, later explaining: “He’s had an incredibly demanding year. At 17, we must protect him.”
While the incident has divided opinion, it serves as a harsh lesson for one of football’s brightest young talents: in defeat, how you carry yourself matters just as much as how you perform.
